Portland heavy psych queens Blackwater Holylight announced on Instagram that the four-piece is heading back to the studio to work on their third studio album. This comes after a successful last year for the band, which including a spot at the 2019 Desert Daze music festival, as well as Levitation and a national tour with Swedish doom metal group Monolord.
Blackwater Holylight revealed that they will be working on this one with local producer Mizmor and engineer Dylan White. This comes off two highly-renowned records, 2019’s “Veils of Winter” and their 2018 self-titled album. The band was set to start a tour with Nashville rockers All Them Witches, but shows were either cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. It will be exciting to see how the band pushes their third album. Of course, they have the backing of independent record label RidingEasy Records.
Blackwater Holylight just so happens to be my favorite Portland band, by far. I would say they might even crack my top five favorite band, local or not. The sound they make – one that incorporates psych, metal, doom, stoner, shoegaze, and yet is still has a dreamy landscape about it – is unlike any other in its genre. Not to mention, an all-female stoner rock band – you can’t get too much more badass than that.
They’re also the band that I’ve seen the most, at least when it comes to local bands. They even blew my mind when I saw them perform at Desert Daze. Although I’m saddened that this album won’t be backed by a handful of live shows around Portland and festivals, I’m looking forward to hearing their third go at it. Stay tuned.
