Levitation’s live sessions continued over the weekend with Frankie and the Witch Fingers, an L.A. based groovy, garage psych four-piece. The Session marks the seventh of the series as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the music industry.
I first saw Frankie and the Witch Fingers in the confined, 98-cap basement of Portland’s The Liquor Store. It was wild and fun – a friend of mine even managed to crowd surf (despite the extremely low ceilings) and hit the ground so hard that he broke his foot. That’s just a small, telltale sign of how rowdy Frankie and the Witch Fingers can get. I then went on to see them perform again at the 2019 Desert Daze festival.
The band’s Levitation Session was no different, to no surprise. The four members appeared on camera in what seemed to be the Joshua Tree desert and invited their viewers into an old barn, and that’s where all the fun began. They played a healthy dose of songs off of their 2020 record “Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters…” and even a couple off of their previous album “ZAM,” including my favorite song, “Dracula Drug.” Each track included a drawn-out jam interlude, which you couldn’t help but bob your head and tap your foot to. Here’s the full tracklist:
- “Sweet Freak”
- “Where’s Your Reality?”
- “Dracula Drug”
- “Can You Hear Me Now?”
The visualizations were on par with Levitation’s brand and Frankie and the Witch Fingers’ sound. Fuzzy, distorted images of the band members doused in a rainbow of colors filled the screen. So much so, that it made it difficult to make out the band members’ faces and their instruments of choice, yet it made for a perfect, psychedelic experience.
While I can’t say that live streams will ever take over the place in my heart where live shows reside, it is an exciting opportunity to see an exclusive concert from my favorite bands while we’re stuck inside. If you missed Frankie and the Witch Fingers’ Levitation Session, be sure to catch the next one, with none other than the OSEES. You know I’ll be there.
